Editing Question

I am going to invest a few bucks to find an editing program that is better then movie maker or the one I got from Pasasonic. Right now I have to import the movie, change the extention of the file, import it to movie maker, make the edits, save and import the file, change the extention back from a JPEG and burn it so I can watch it on my DVD player. I just want software where I can import, edit, and burn. Does that exsist? I am running Vista Home edition and I have a Panasonic SDR-H200.
