General discussion

ebay.doubleclick

Dec 14, 2003 8:39AM PST

This problem (actually more annoyance than problem) just started "out of the blue". While online, regardless of where I'm at or what I'm doing, a blue/gray box appears on the screen saying "The operation timed out whenattempting to contact ebay.doubleclick.net.

I don't know who ebay.doubleclick is, and I'm not trying to contact them, at least not knowingly. When I did try to go to ebay.doubleclick.net, I got a message box saying they could not be contacted.

Can someone please tell me what's going on, and how I can stop it? Thanks.

Onefinger, In Addition To Bob's Good Suggestions...

...it's a good idea to clean out the Cookies and Temporary Internet Files frequently. "Bad" websites will place cookies and files on your computer that will direct your browser to unwanted sites. The programs mentioned by Bob will clean that stuff out, but if you take proper precautions, you can make things a little safer.

You didn't tell us what operating system you're using, or which browser version either, but this should get the job done. (I routinely clean out the C\Windows\Temporary Internet Files folder and the C\Windows\Cookies folder.) While in Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" in the upper left, choose "Internet Options" from the menu. When that loads, on the "General" tab, in the "Temporary Internet Files" section, click on "Delete Files" button. When the next little window pops up, place a CHECK mark in the "Delete All Offline Content" box, then click on OK.

Next, if you're using Internet Explorer 6, while still in the "General" tab, click on the "Delete Cookies" button. Click on OK and your done. If you happen to be using Internet Explorer 5.5 or ealier, then RIGHT click on the "Start" button, choose "Explore" from the little menu. When Explorer window opens, looking on the left side of the windows, click on the + sign next to the "Windows" folder to expand it. Then click on the + sign next to the "Cookies" folder, then delete all the cookies in the folder. Next, click on the + sign next to the "Temporary Internet Files" folder, then delete any remaining files there. (There may be a file named "index.dat" that can't be removed. That's OK, just leave it there.)

HOpe this helps.

Thanks. Will this still take care of the problem if I'm using Netscape (which is what I usually do)?
