Earthlink Web Host denies my editing of a binary file????

I'm updating/redesigning a site that's on earthlink. i took the code directly from the server, rebuilt it in dreamweaver, and uploaded it back. now when i go back in to get the code to make additional changes, it says i can't edit a binary file. does earthlink hate dreamweaver? i'm screwed. how do i get it back in? and once i do, how do i keep it from happening again?
