Suleman,

Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information as possible about the computer. The operating system, processor speed, amount of RAM installed, and any other information you think might be helpful. (In your case, what is the name and location of the file you're trying to delete?) The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be.

In the meantime, log in as an "administrator" if need be, try restarting the computer into "Safe Mode",(Use the instructions below.) then do a "search" for the file name while in "Safe Mode", then RIGHT click on the file when it shows up in the search window, choose "Delete".

How To Restart In "Safe Mode"

Restart the computer, pressing the F8 key once per second, till it loads a selection screen. Use the up and down arrows to select "Safe Mode", press enter, and the computer will load into a safe mode. It looks like a normal screen but with Safe Mode in each of the four corners. When you?re done making the changes, restart the machine and it will boot normally.

Hope this helps.

A somewhat more helpful response

Windows has an intermittant bug that causes the problem you describe. I was just hit by it last night with something else.

Basically restarting the computer (or logging out and back in on 2K/XP) will cause the "lock" on the file to be removed and you should be able to delete it without issue.

i currently have windows 98, i'll try the safe mode method, and could the problem have to do with any of my user settings

No, it's a bug in the way Windows keeps track of which files are being used. It has nothing to do with any of your settings. Just know that this will happen from time to time, and you may as well just wait until the next time you need to reboot the system (and with Win9x, that usually doesn't take too long), then delete the file first thing after rebooting.

Suleman, I Don't Think It's Your Settings, But...

....As "yewanchors" described, sometimes Windows keeps track of files strangely. Sometimes a reboot will allow you to delete a file, sometimes it requires booting into "Safe Mode" so the file isn't being "locked" by Windows, and sometimes, you may need to change the status of the file to something other than "read only" because it was saved to your computer that way.

Check for the "read only" status by RIGHT clicking directly on the file, choose "Properties", then UNCHECK the box next to "Read Only". If you've made any changes, click on "Apply", then OK. Now attempt to delete the file.

Hope this helps.

I tried the safe mode option, but i still got the same error, although i located the file going into c-drive, and not searching (does that affect it in anyway)

And do u mean the "read only" box or another one.

Also i will go into more detail. i was downloading the application via the net using a download manager named "Flashget". i tried downloading the file, expecting it to be roughly 3mb (i am currently on broadband 140k), but the download was finished in an instant. i downloaded the file to the following folder: C:\EMULE0~1.EXE
the file size is 0 bytes, and i have scanned it for possible viruses (using an updated version of avast antivirus). i also scanned my computer for possible spyware/adware with the lates version of Ad-aware. of course nothing was found.
the actual file seems to be in MS-DOS format (when i right click on the file, i see more options: program, font etc.) is that alright???

also someone told me to try and delete some files in: "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP" saying that there could be something in there. and they also told me their could be a problem with the registry or something.

THANKS FOR THE HELP SO FAR Happy

Yes, I meant to UNCHECK the "Read only" box. No, it shouldn't matter whether you navigate directly to the file, or do a "search" for it.

You mention that you downloaded the file to a "folder"? at "C:\EMULE0~1.EXE". Is that correct? It's a 0 byte folder? If that's the case, then it appears like nothing was downloaded. (It's also one reason why I don't like to use Download Managers.) So far, you haven't mentioned the file name that you want to delete. What is that file name?

Regardless, if you are correct with the folder location, and that is the thing that you're trying to delete, and there is no file inside, and you've change the folder attribut so it's not "read only", and you still can't remove the folder, then delete it in DOS like this:

Restart the computer into DOS by clicking on Start-Shutdown, then select "Restart the Computer in MS-DOS Mode". When the computer restarts to the black screen, at the prompt, type this: cd \ (leave a single space between cd and the backslash), then press the "Enter" key. You should now see C:\> prompt. Now type: DELTREE EMULE0~1.EXE, (make sure that you've correctly typed the letter "O" or number "0"-zero in emuleo~1.exe. You'll need to verify which one it is.) then press the "Enter" key". You may get a message asking you to confirm that you are deleting the directory and all the files inside, type "Y", then press the "Enter" key. Now push the power button on the computer to shut it down. Wait one minute, then restart the computer and the folder will be gone.

Hope this helps.
