E-mail short cut brings up wrong client.

Jun 4, 2004 3:55PM PDT

I love the following tip I found on the Net, however, when I use it the Outlook Express mail window opens. What do I need to do so that my default Netscape E-mail Clients opens?
................................
Right-click your desktop and select New, Shortcut. Then type mailto: yourbuddy@hisISP.com in the Command line (Windows 98 and Me) or location field. Enter your pal's e-mail address after "mailto:". Click Next, give the shortcut a name, and place it in your Quick Launch toolbar. When you click it, your e-mail program will open a new message with your friend's address in the To: field.
......................................
Thank you for any help.

Keeping in mind that the tip may never work for Web e-mail or AOL, the client that is launched is determined by what is set in IE, Tools, Internet Options, the Programs tab, and what's in the E-mail box.

Again, this will not wotk with web based e-mail, AOL and many others. For a fix, you talk to AOL and the others.

It's not Web e-mail, it's POP3 mail using the Netscape e-mail client.

E-mail is set to Netscape Mail in IE, Tools, Internet Options, Programs.

However, after that hint I've gone back to Explorer, where I had been rooting around earlier, to look around some more. I think the answer is the settings in Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Type. I get so lost there LOL.

Skipping the Extensions and sorting the File Types to show the URL list, I found URL:MailTo Protocol and it has the OE icon. It has a blank next to Open with: but clicking Advanced and then Edit it shows Application used to perform action: F:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe.

Now here is where I get lost. I want Netscape mail program to open that shortcut but I think, based on past experience, that I need to look under Mozilla not Netscape? .... I just can't find the path that I need. Can you help me with that?

Be aware that you didn't supply this information so my guess can't be that good.

As to Netscape, there is a support FAQ for that at Netscape.com and I hope you used it. In fact, I know I've read it there...

http://www.google.com/search?&q=netscape+%22default+email%22 finds the prior discussions and what registry key needs help.

I think I have it now!

I did post the question to the Netscape forum but they didn't seem to have the answer to my unique situation. However, with the help of friend I got my short cut to work using Netscape. The answer was not in making changes to File Type but the path placed in the short cut itself:

"C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" mailto:myfriend@email.address
