Dynex LCDs???

Jul 20, 2009 5:56AM PDT

I'm in the market for an LCD TV. Money is an issue, but I would be willing to spend more for good quality. I've seen those TVs advertised on BestBuy for very little, but I don't know if the quality is any good (I believe the Dynexes are the BestBuy brand). Here it is:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9144295&st=dynex+42&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1218035133352

I'm looking for a 42" LCD and this one is $599.

Is this a good deal or should I look for something else? What's the word on the Dynex TVs? Thanks.

Spend the couple hundred dollars more and stick with a name brand to avoid headaches and enjoy much better PQ. I see Panasonic, Samsung & LG as alternatives at that relative price point. There's also Sharp & Sony.

Dynex's aren't too bad, they are good bang for your buck TV. Personally though I would look at Vizio before Dynex, Vizio will be in the ballpark price was and will offer a step up in Picture Quality and adjustments. Just my 2 cents, but go to the store, doing some adjusting to the settings to get a nice pictue and go from there.

Agreed, price point and acceptability factor are always subjective. That said, it makes little sense for someone who's already spending $599 to stick with a bargain HDTV with very little in the way of PQ compared to even the next tick up on the ladder for not much more. If getting service down the road is even an issue to factor in, then I would walk- no, run- away from the lower priced in house BB brands sold. Sorry.

Thanks all for your responses. I will stay away from this deal then. Ok, so, if money is a factor, then what would be an acceptable price to pay for a good LCD TV? When would be a good time to buy it? I know last Christmas prices went down considerably. Should I wait till this new holiday season to make my purchase at a great price? Thanks.

No such thing per se- it's subjective

Some brands go on sale at different times of the year/various dates based on other factors. It's not always something which can be predicted with certainty. For example, Samsung might be having sales @ Best Buy before Thanksgiving and possibly prior to the super bowl in the winter. Even so they might not offer *all* their models for reduced prices. YMMV. You get the idea anyway.

What's an 'acceptable' price is even more subjective based on the type of LCD you have in mind/features/picture quality you are looking for. The most expensive LCD models are backlit LED, and do look stellar IMHO. In your price range there are plenty to choose from (generally not backlit though) if you follow the brand names I suggested to avoid future headaches on service and be able to enjoy decent PQ. Look at the big box stores first and perhaps see if a place like Costco or Amazon offers the same or similar LCDs for slightly less.
