General discussion

dynamic pages coding

Apr 27, 2007 7:56AM PDT

I have a website with a few dynamic pages that were created in ASP. I need additional dynamic pages. I have been told by someone offering to do the work that the new dynamic pages should be done in PHP---and that the others should be converted to PHP--or the site will not work correctly. Until he talked to me, I'd never heard of ASP or PHP, so two questions: is PHP better than ASP? And do all dynamic pages on a site need to be coded in the same script? Obviously I am in over my head and I need sensible guidance. I can't afford to agree to unnecessary expensive work. thanks so much.

Everything looks like a nail. The issue is not so clear but when your programmer/webslinger uses PHP then you give them so leeway IF they deliver on time and on schedule.

A few thoughts....

What makes one technology better than another? There are lots of different perspectives on this and depending on what perspective one has there are likely various biases as some folks may like to do websites in Java, others in ASP, others in ASP.Net, others in PHP, and then there are other ways to do it too.

No, not all dynamic pages need to be coded in the same script though it is useful to require those maintaining the site to use the same script rather than be required to know multiple scripting languages.

I think the key for you is to figure out what kind of upgrade do you want to have done as well as what kind of plans for the future do you have for how to handle this now and in the future.
