Question

Dynamic frequency selection on WiFi routers

Feb 25, 2018 12:34PM PST

Does anyone have any insight into why dynamic frequency selection is not offered on more routers? The only consumer-level router that supports it is (AFAIK) the Portal. Is the feature just not that powerful?

The fact that not all devices are compatible can't help, but my understanding is that commercial access points have supported DFS for a while nonetheless.

Why would I need this?

I have yet to have an issue that this would solve. Maybe that's why?

Have you set up a WiFi network in a congested area?

The premise of DFS is that it gives you access to parts of the spectrum that many other routers can't access. If you live in an apartment building, there might be lots of routers using the normal ranges but few on the radar frequencies. If you don't have many neighbors physically close to you, you may be fine. Perhaps consumers living at high densities are not a large segment of the market?

Why yes we have.

Our office has quite a few hotspots and we found they all work great without such a feature. It would take a few lunchtimes to cover why it works.
