DVR Technology

Looks like all the DVRs on the market require a subscription to TiVo. I've got no beef with TiVo, but why can't you find a DVR that records analog cable like a VRC, except to a hard drive?

I'd like the option of recording without constantly swapping tapes or recording multiple simultaneous events. Seems like the hardware should be able to do that without a subscription service as the middle man.

Check out the DVD recorders with Tivo built in. These give a basic Tivo service for free and if you want to upgrade then you pay. When you want to archive, all you do is burn it to DVD.

Maybe you're shopping in the wrong store?

I know that Panasonic, Pioneer, Lite-on and several others make DVRs that have nothing to do with TiVo- you can find reviews of them on the Cnet site (although it's not easy to find them!). Maybe try the Panasonic web site, et al. Then again, I live in Canada- maybe theres some difference in whats available in the States and Canada? (Usually it works the other way around, though)
