DVR questions

Jul 29, 2009 12:53PM PDT

At work, where we have coax TV feeds which are analog, someone needs a stand-alone DVR to record some of the feeds for delayed viewing. I've been asked to find out about a compatible DVR, so here's my questions:

1) Can a new DVR with Digital tuner record an analog coax feed? I can't find a stand-alone DVR with an analog tuner any longer, or at least an analog DVD that doesn't need a cable or satellite box. I know an analog tuner can't "see" the newer digital signals, but I didn't know if the reverse was possible.

2) I can find DVD Recorders that have analog tuners and that have a large internal hard-drives, but on this type of unit can someone replay and watch what has been recorded on the internal drive or does the recorded content need to be burned to a DVD first?

Sorry about the lame, probably obvious questions, but I've never owned either a DVR or a DVD recorder and the online descriptions don't seem to answer my questions.

Thanks,
Dan

DVR options
Jul 30, 2009 3:59AM PDT

Thanks Bob and John. These look like good options. I'm sending the links along to others for review.

Bob, to answer your question about why not simply record to VHS...The unit is needed to review select broadcast feeds, and it requires being able to scan through the footage to verify image, then we delete and record again. We need several of these so that each transmission feed can be recorded and reviewed.

John, I've been good, but work has gone through about a 40% reduction. We've got new shows arriving to our stages, so I am optimistic about work volume over the next year. It's funny how busy it can get even when business slows down.

How it's done
Jul 30, 2009 10:46AM PDT

Bob,

We have several dozen MATV lines here, which show what our satellites are receiving and sending. These coax lines are now simply connected to TVs for people to watch. Some people need to time shift their viewing of select events that we've received or sent, and having the data on an internal drive would make reviewing much easier than if it were on tape. These coax lines carry analog signals.

So it is not being done yet?

Your reply didn't appear to tell how this time shifting was done today.

Time Shifting

Bob,

The needed time-shift viewing isn't done now. It's something that is being requested because of some new programming and technical strategies here.
