If you look back to SDTV days, I can't find a DVR built into any model for years. Let's say there are none.

-> Why not an external DVR? Also, remember that HD content is tightly under control so you may discover it's only available if there is no DRM (see MPAA, DRM, RIAA, and more on google.)

Also look closely at the DVRs that do record HD. You find that most of the time, the recorded content is stepped down to 480p or 720.

The short answer is No. There arent any LCD or Plasma TV with built in DVRs. You can get HDTVs with built in various HD Tuners (ASTC, NTSC, QAM) and with a built in DVD player, but I've never seen or heard of a HDTV with a built in DVR.

As the previous poster said some DVRs down-convert the signal to 480p or 720p (from 1080i) ... Down converting to 720p isnt a big deal as the video content will still be HD Quality, but make sure if you have a HDTV that the DVR you get is an HD DVR that down-converts to a MIN of 720p.
