Question

DVI-D Single/Dual Link

Apr 15, 2018 5:04AM PDT

Hello, my monitor has a single VGA port and my newly installed graphics card has a HDMI and DVI-D (dual link) port.
I recently got a DVI-D (single link) cable with a DVI-D (dual link) to VGA adapter on the other end, I tried to plug it in but it didn't work. Did I put my card in wrong or could it be the problem of the cable?

Answer
DVI-D doesn't have VGA signals

So any adapter should fail. Nothing is wrong with the cable or adapter here.

If you need to catch up on 5 or more types of DVI ports check out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

There are HDMI and DVI-D to VGA convertors but these are often problematic so I never suggest them. Folk do go with that and some work but for me to suggest a troublesome convertor is not something I'll do.

Again, there is no flaw in your adapter or cable. It should not work.

Get a gpu with a vga connector or get a monitor with a dvi connector.
