Storing DVD at Hard Drive ?
by Papa Echo / January 11, 2009 8:19 PM PST

How large is the collection ? What capacity/how many are your hard drives ? Are you storing for archieving purposes(the contents not playable on computer or DVD player)or are you storing the DVDs as a library where you can choose which titles/DVD to play (from a menu) on a computer ?

Storing DVD at Hard Drive ?
by slebonio / January 14, 2009 11:14 PM PST

Thanks for the reply!

Ok... I have possibly 200-300 Dvds I would like to convert. Storage is not really an issue as I shall be investing in a few 1TB hard drives... I will just buy more when I run out of room.

The truth is I am a "performer" and allot of the material I perform I have learned from DVDs. It would be very usefull to be abel to have the DVDs stored on a few hard drives so I would be able to reseach any given topic buy just scanning the hard drive... this is why keeping the menu and chapters would be very handy.

Do you know of any software out there which would do the job?

Best wishes

If these are commercially produced dvd,

putting it to a harddrive may not be that simple because of the DRM/copy protection issue. Just my thought.

Can be done.....
by Papa Echo / January 15, 2009 8:01 AM PST

Copy the contents of the DVDs,(subject to copy right issues) each in its own folder with a appropriate name which you can your Hard Disk....Create a simple HTML file (web page) with links referencing the video folders (this would be the menu you required.)and put this file on the HD too, together with the Video folders. So, you open up the HTML file with your browser, the links appear, select the video folder link of your choice and the folder comes up. Open it, therin lies your video file. You need a player which plays VOB files installed,( e.g. DivX player ?)....

the copyright isnt really an issue... as there isnt any on most of them.

That sounds like a plan, I have never created a HTML file before but I think i'm going to have fun finding out how and putting it together.

Thanks for your help and advice

I am doing the same project. My collection sits on a NIS drives
and I want to watch all my videos on 3 LCD TVs in my house.
I was told I should rip and store them in AVI format, but
I would image the quality will deteriorate.
Can some one tell me how much.Is there any other format that will
somewhat shrink the file size but not the quality of the video file.
Thank you

Ideal DVD works wonders. You can save it as a full "DVD" or compress it.
