dvd slide shows / movie software image quality

Mar 11, 2005 7:21AM PST

I am preparing a dvd slide show that includes about 150 pictures, using ArcSoft movie software. After saving the file to a dvd, the images look terrible (when played on a dvd player hooked up to a plasma tv, and when played through windows media player). I have tried saving using the mpeg1, mpeg2 and svcd settings. Is this problem common to all programs that convert the images to these movie formats? Is there another format (or software) I can use for projection of good quality photos, with music, on either a regular tv, a plama tv or a computer screen?

On the TV screen you have ratty old NTSC.

And current offerings (Final Cut HD being an exception) will only make a ratty old NTSC or PAL format which is what you are likely complaining about.

To get a good slide show on a PC, you can go native and use your PCs resolution since you are not limited by standards. Even IRFANVIEW can let you test out what is possible.

ArcSoft Success

I've use ArcSoft ShowBiz DVD2.1 that came with an HP DVD dc3000 Movie Writer many times to make DVD slide shows and pictures look beautiful on my Mit. DLP HDTV.

I just followed the directions, saved, and burn the DVD. It took awhile to master ArcSoft but I never had a problem once I burn the DVD.

thanks for your help. i am using showbiz 1.3.5.37 on a media center pc. the program has different settings for saving/conversion - mpeg1, mpeg2, vcd and others. no matter what i use, when i playback on windows media, some pictures are distorted and quality is generally not great. when i playback on a tv through a dvd player, the picture quality is poor. any other suggestions?

Slide Shows via Windows Media Center on HDTV Monitor
Mar 13, 2005 7:25AM PST

I am experiencing the same problem. Most DVD slide shows save at 640X480 resolution, good for standard TV. However, I am unable to find any decent software for high definition TV's. I think the work around, since you have a Media Center Computer, is to hook up your computer to your HDTV by VGA if your HDTV supports it. Then use the Slide Show that is built into Windows Media Center and use your HDTV as your comnputer monitor. The beauty of Media Center slide show is the Ken Burns pan and scan effect. However, I haven't figured out a way to add audio.

So far, not much in the pipeline, but there is Final Cut Pro HD (Apple) and Cinelerra (Linux) that will get you HD content today. You may be 1 year early to this party.

media center

I have a dvi connection to a plasma hdtv, and the media center slide show looks great (downside, no music, no way to save/burn a dvd). The arcsoft slide show program looks reasonably good through this arrangement as well, and includes music, but the video is a big choppy at times.

I want to use a slide show at a party at another location, which means playing it on a dvd player/tv setup, or a laptop/projector setup. Thus, I need to create a file that I can load into a laptop or burn to a dvd. Media center is useless for this task, and in arcsoft the picture quality is not good when i burn a dvd, or create an mpeg1 or mpeg2 file and play through windows media player.
