DVD's

I see advertisements for DVD+R's and DVD-R's. Same with CD's. What do the plus and minus signify?

DVD Format wars.

Besides the Plus and Minus, there was DVD-RAM. But that has pretty much vanished except Panasonic still wants to use DVD-RAM.

It's a format of the media and at the end of the day, I can't see any advantage from one over the other. All that I know is that if you have a DVD+RW recorder, then you get Plus media. If you get some DVD+/-RW recorder, then you can get what words best in your other DVD units.

NO ONE has a database of DVD players that will tell you which works best with what type.
