DVD-RW drive won't recognize CDs

by lbthe3 / June 4, 2008 11:12 AM PDT

Windows XP Service Pack 2/Samsung TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552U.

Not sure if this is the right area to post this, but... Recently my DVD-RW drive has been unable to recognize CDs. It plays audio CDs just fine, but if I put in a CD based game or CD-R, the drive acts as if there's no CD in there and doesn't recognize it at all. I get the "please insert a disk into drive d" message. I can hear my DVD-RW drive do the usual spinning when I close the disk tray, but then it quits and nothing else happens. It writes/reads DVDs with no problems, it's just the CDs that do this.

I've updated my DVD-RW drive firmware to the latest version, plus I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters to no avail. Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

Have you tried another drive?

We have a few hundred zombie drives (kept for parts) that only work with DVD or CD content. Its a common failure but good for us that owners insist we try firmware, drivers, reload the OS as we make the most money when they insist.

Lens cleaning maybe?
by lbthe3 / June 5, 2008 2:53 AM PDT

I have another computer with a CD-R drive, and all the CDs that don't work on my main computer work on it. The DVD-RW drive on my main computer actually seems to recognize CDs maybe 1 in 20 tries, does that indicate it's not a zombie drive but maybe just needs a lens cleaning?

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
