DVD-RW Dive stopped working

The Optiarc DVD-RW AD5560A drive on my Dell Inspiron 1501 (running Windows XP)has stopped working - error code 39, "the driver may be corrupted or missing". Also the computer will not recognize my mobile broadband modem (same error code)so i cannot connect to the internet to download a driver update.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Google that error code

Google that error code, because there's a fairly simple registry hack that should clear it up. Just write down or print off the instructions from whatever system you're using to read this.
