DVD ROM not reading

Apr 21, 2005 8:25PM PDT

The computer recognises that i have a cdrw drive and a dvd rom drive (these drives are not in a combi, they are seperate). What the problem is now is that the DVD ROM drive does not recognise or play any orignal DVDs, however it does play CDs and Indian DVDs but these files do not automatically come up when inserted, i would have to click on the drive to access them. When i try to click on the DVD drive when i insert a orignal DVD, it says please insert a disc in to drive... I even tried to put a DVD R which has files on it, once again this is not recognised.

I went through device manager to see if the drivers were installed, in which they are. The DVD drive is set on region 2, so the region is not the problem.

What i thought was the problem was the cable that is attached to the DVD drive was not inserted properly. I took it out and inserted it again a couple of times, however this did not sort the problem.

If my DVD drive was dead then why does it read, not automatically, the Indian movies.
And i have InterVideo WinDVD software, which came with the computer, installed

This area wipes some users out since the drive is only 1/2 dead.

Since DVDs seem to work, the TEST is to boot a bootable CD. If it can't boot from CD, it's another ZOMBIE drive.

I clicked the create new discussions, wont supposed to. This was the post.

So what kind of CD do i use for a bootable start up and how do i do the bootable start up.

I tried installing DVD43, and inserted both a original DVD and the Indian one, the original did not even pick up, the indian movie worked as normal when opened WinDVD, but DVD43 did not recognse it, it says that 0/2 Video DVD... it should say 1/2 if it was recognised.

Bootable CD.

Any XP CD, System Restore CDs, most Linux install CDs.

Just need to boot, do not need to install or such.

A comment about DVD43...

If you want to screw up a machine more, keep adding such software.

So i just put the Win XP recovery disc in, and restart the computer, do i have to press F1, F2... or just let it run in the DVD ROm drive

Yes. But..

I know NOTHING about how your PC is configured to boot. Be sure it's set to boot from CD/DVD drives in the BIOS.

This is my ACID test to sniff out a bum drive.

I inserted the Win XP recovery disc before restarting the computer, and when it did restart it stated 'press any key to boot from disc' so i did so and it ran the recovery disc, i then quit the setup.

So the CD does boot from my DVD ROM drive

That's great.

Now try the common cure.

1. Delete the keys you find at http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6142-0.html?forumID=5&threadID=58601&messageID=750847 in the registry. (READ the KB article) Try again.

2. Boot SAFE MODE and in the Device Manger remove the CD/DVD drives in the device manager. Reboot and it will reinstall them.

3. Be sure that you are not writing about AUTOPLAY. That is another function and not indicated as the issue in your post.

In the KB file, can i try method two instead of one, will it still have the same outcome

No, there is no point attempting the second method, as it states that there has to be a question mark visible, so i guess i have to try method one.

Attempting method one, will it damage my computer if it some how goes wrong.

Sorry, I must leave you at this point.

I offered my best advice and you are not going to act on it. The KB article is safe and something I use in the course of fixing such problems.

Microsoft has a penchant to writing the article in such a way that people will reply "doesn't apply to me" and pass up an easy fix.

As such, I hope you found an easy and cheap solution.

I tried the method by microsoft from the link given, i could not do method one because there was no upper.. file but there was a lower... file, so it told me to do method two. So i done method two, by uninstalling my DVD ROM drive and then searching for new hardware, and i have the same problem.

When deleting the drivers, do i have to delete fro both the CDRW drive and the DVD ROM drive, or just the DVD ROM drive like i did

You do both drives.
Apr 22, 2005 6:22AM PDT

Just in case I missed it, did you EVER install any DRAG TO CD or CD EMULATION software.

PLEASE write about such software since I suspect a CD emulator from your run-in with DVD43.

No, that is the only software i have installed as i read it from a post in my topic. My DVD ROM has not been working before i installed that software.

I went into safe mode and deleted the two drives (i could not do method one because there was no upper filter, and it says on method two that there should be a question mark next to the drive, but there wasnt), and then once i started my computer it automatically said that it found new hardware, which was both my CDRW drive and my DVD drive. However, there is still the same problem, it reads the Indian, not the original.

Usually when i reformat a computer, the drivers are not installed, and i use a CD to install them, but it seems as though the drivers are already on the computer, is that right, and is that the reason why i dont have to use that CD.
But i tried to use the CD to 'update the driver', and it says that i already have the latest version.

I dont know it this might affect it, but last week i installed ad-aware for spyware protection, and it found 396, or there about, different spywares, however it did not delete 35 of them, and the installed spyware doctor and it got rid of them. With this i installed spybot s and d, and it got rid of four spy files.
