dvd recorders

Why don't dvd recorders have a time used or recorded gaugeMy vhs recorder told me where I was on the tape how much tape was left.The works now my top of the line Panasonic says its on I think! What happened to where am I on the rewind?How much tape is lef?>How fast am I fast forwarding?
Help guys I want my vhs back!Whats the closest to a vhs tape unit in dvd?

As the compression varies with the recorded content you can't predict how many minutes are left. You could give a gauge of how many bytes are left but that would be too techy for consumers.

TAPE was used a some inches per second so there was an easy way to tell how much time was left or used.

I have a Magnavox and a Toshiba and I find that they can displays lot more informations than a vcr machine. It displays titles, chapters, time of video, amount of recording space available, etc.. If I understand your question correctly, then maybe looking a little more into the manual might help. I might add, all these informations are displayed when I pressed the menu/display button of the remote.
