DVD recorder set up

Jan 4, 2006 12:29AM PST

I bought, for my girlfriend, an AlbaRDVD 1002 dvd recorder for Christmas. Her TV is a Phillips set, about 20 years old. On the back of the TV it has a very simple set up. An input for the antenna, a scart port and what I believe to be a s-video. On the front there are no other inputs, but it does have a fairly good remote control. Until this time it had a Sony video recorder attached, which seemed to work fine.

After disconnecting the video player, I followed the short and simple instructions from Alba exactly. This was to plug the antenna input line into the DVD player, run the RF cable from the DVD player into the antenna input on the TV and connect, via the scart cable the TV and DVD player.

Then the instructions said to turn on both the TV & DVD and an on screen menu would appear.

In reality, at this point the only thing that happened was a HELLO lighting up on the DVD player - nothing more. I spoke to Alba and the first thing they said was that DVD player could be defective and to exchange it. The new one did exactly the same. I got the Alba guy back on the phone and we went through it step by step. When we got no further along his only comment was that the TV was not compatible with the DVD and that I should try another brand.

Fine, but which? or is there another way of hooking up the DVD player that I'm missing?

dvd recorder connection

I have run across the same problem in connecting a dvd player to an old TV set without av connections. If you have a VHS recorder attached, you already have a av convertor. The VHS recorder has av line inputs (rca jacks) in the back. You need to connect the av output from the dvd recorder to the av line input jacks on the VHS recorder. To use the dvd recorder for viewing material on the TV you must have your VHS recorder on and line input selected (usually one channel below channel 2, or selected by a ''input'' button on your remote.) If you would rather go directly from the dvd recorder to your TV set, you can buy a av convertor from Radio Shack or other electonics retailer for about $30. Using the VHS conversion method allows you to tape material from your dvd recorder to VHS tape as long it is not copy protected (commercial dvd movies). Note that if you want both your VHS recorder ad dvd recorder connected to your cable line at the same time, you need a simple splitter to channel the signal to each.

Thank you very much. Over the weekend I'll get to work on it. Again thanks
