DVD RAM versus DVD +/- RW

Dec 13, 2004 6:03AM PST

I am interested in getting a stand alone VHS to DVD recorder. I am interested in the Panasonic models but I am concerned about DVD-RAM as the multiple use format versus either RW. I will keep most of my burned discs for my own use, so adaptability is not a big issue. I would occasionally burn something for a friend using a one time disk.

Anyone have any experience with these formats? Is there any chance that DVD-RAM will be obsoleted? I don't want to be stuck with unusable disks in the future.

Is it worth the extra $$$ for a Sony or other unit that will burn to RW and RAM?

thanks,
Jason

I picked up the RCA unit (DVD+R/W) at compgeeks for about 120 bucks so the price wasn't much more than a high priced DVD player. It's nice enough, but about DVDRAM. To get that price I waited for the Sunday midnight madness sale.

The writing is on the wall. Goto office max, staples and see if DVDRAM disks are in ready supply.

Hi...

Believe it or not, one of the hottest brand of DVD Recorder right now is LiteOn. They are the actual manufacturer of the product. Do a google search on LiteOn LVW-5005 and you will read some pretty good reviews.

For one, this recorder can on DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW and also plays just about everything... DVD+-R/RW, CD-R/RW, MP3, VCD, SVCD.

I have one of these as a sample at home and its awesome.

I highly recommend this unit as it is priced very reasonable and extremely easy to use.
