DVD-R written as video fails after a few hours

Oct 4, 2004 1:13AM PDT

After succesfully writing a video DVD, it plays wonderfully in any DVD player (this includes an old - but great Pioneer DV-414). After a few hours, it`s impossible to play it in ANY player, even the LG DVD Drive (Windows says "function error"). The data (I mean AudioTS and VideoTS) is readable when I make a disk image, but the disc just isn`t recognized as a video DVD.
I left the disc playing for about 20 hours without a problem, even ejecting the disc a few times.
It seems to me the problem occurs after the disc gets colder (I mean 23C). But it is just a especulation.

A friend of mine tested other media; same problem. Using a Pioneer DVD writer (soory, don't have the model right now) there was no problem.

I'm using the LG GSA 4081B, updated firmware. Athlon XP 2.6GHz, 512Mb RAM, MB EliteGroup L7VMM2, HD Maxtor 6Y120L0, Win 2k (all Microsoft Windows Updates installed, SP4)
The media is Samsung 4x 4.7 DVD-R, and the software is Sony's DVD Achitect 1.0c and Mediachance DVD Lab 1.4 Beta 2.

ANY suggestion is welcome...

Sorry, Ray.

I left it playing on may DVD player for about 20 hours, just after burning.

Then, I turned off the player and went to sleep. Next morning, the player just said "cannot be played".

I didn't remove the media, and it was not exposed to moist or dust or anything.
Perhaps the problem is related to bum media, since (I guess) the media is imported from China, probably in container exposed to weather variations.
Thanks Bob for the clue.

I'll try other media, from other sources. But I'm still interested in other sugestions.

This effect was noted in home recorded AudioCDs as well. The usual cause is an aging recorder or bum media or exposure of the media to sunlight.

Best of luck finding it, but do try recording on another make media and as a slow speed.

Problem solved - Bad Media

I bought medias from S-MAC. The problem doesn't occur anymore.

I learned, by the worst means, that a few cents wont pay.
Quoting some word I've read on a videographer site "the bitterness of poor quality longs much more than the sweetness of the low price."
