DVD-R Frustration

Jun 22, 2006 10:59AM PDT

I am a newbie to macs. I have always worked with pc's but in only a few weeks, I love the switch however.... the dvd-r burning issue is driving me nuts.
I wanted to copy or burn one of my albums in i-photo to a dvd-r- I thought that this would also enable me to view it on another computer or dvd player-
the Matshita DVD-r UJ846 is installed on my machine. If I follow the "help" instructions - I am to insert a blank dvd-r in the drive. It immediately ejects.
I thought I had the problem solved using the disk utitlity - I created a blank disk image, dragged my files to it, inserted the blank dvd-r and was able to click burn- it gave every indication that it was indeed burning the info, then verified my disk . When I tried to view this dvd-r in anything - nothing was there.
When I tried to put it in my drive --it continually ejected itself no matter what program I used-therefore I assume I burned nothing.
The blank disc in the drive was never shown in my finder window or never appeared on my desk top.

Am I missing something due to my mac inexperience or do I have a problem.
Thanks , K

Burning DVD's
Jun 22, 2006 11:32AM PDT

You don't mention the machine you have but I will assume a later model Mac.
Once you have created you slide show in iPhoto, choose export and then choose export to iDVD.

This will do all the work for you and then present you with the iDVD opening dialog where you choose the style of your DVD.

If you are using iPhoto 6 just choose Share and Send to iDVD. It's that simple. You may be over engineering the problem and creating the problem.
Try the above and let us know, we'll be glad to help

dvd-R Frustration

I forgot to mention that I had the 20"imac core duo -
I've got to be over engineering as you suggested because this is way too involved- I did want you suggested - I do have iPhoto 6 - I exported my pictures to iDVD and that poppped up however I have to complete a complete project from what I understand to do anything with them-This requires following the whole step by step tutorial - I thought maybe I could just click the burn button but this comes up with an error message about warnings during the project validation and I should fix them first-
Considering I don't know what I'm doing in either application that's easier said than done. Am I missing the boat here? thanks K

You're getting close

Take a look at the instructional video at the Apple site and you will see that you are only a couple of steps from creating your slideshow DVD.

The DVD project has to be completed so that the whole slide show will run on any DVD player and not just one connected to your Mac.

Similar DVD burning problem
Jun 27, 2006 12:38AM PDT

I'm also having difficulties burning to DVD. I created a slide show with music bed in iMovie and clicked the "create iDVD project" button. It launches iDVD and I customize the screen, etc. I click the "burn" button and it gets about 20 minutes into the burning process when it kicks out my disk (I've tried two different kinds) and gives me the following error message...

Power calibration area error (0x73, 0x03.)

I'm using a 12" powerbook using OS 10.3.9.

Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks,
wardy

A Theory
Jun 27, 2006 4:38AM PDT

I note that this message, when Googled, produces hits from the Windows side of the world.
Some claim that you are trying to burn "too close to the edge of the disk" and to reduce the size of the project. Do you know the size of the project you are trying to burn?

The file is a 14 minute .mov and it's 2.93GB. I created a slideshow in iMovie and exported it using it's "high rez" settings. I had thought of that possibility that perhaps the software needs additional "headroom" in order to create the DVD architecture as well as the file. However, a whole gig seems like a lot of headroom to me. When I've googled it myself I've found lots of references to using different media types. So far I've tried DVD R's in Verbatim and Phillips.

Seems like a lot of headroom to me too,

I use Office Depot 8X DVD-R in my machine and, so far, have not had a failure.
I produced a DVD containing three slideshows last year without a problem. That was back in the days when 99 was the limit to the number of photos in a slide show.
I know you don't want to hear that though.
Stupid question, maybe. When was the last time you ran Repair Disk Permissions? It's a long shot, but a free one.

Is there anything at the Apple Site/support/discussions about this problem?

I just ran the disk permissions a couple days ago, but thanks. That was a good suggestion. I'm staring at the prospect of having my entire family stare at my 12" monitor at this family reunion this weekend, aargh!

I may try upgrading to Tiger (which just came in the mail today) and see if I have any better luck there. Thanks much!
