"Would someone please explain what differs DVD-R from DVD+R?"

Sure. If our company sends out a DVD on -R and the customer says it doesn't work, we send them the +R media and make an entry in the customer database to send the +R from now on.

It's that simple. -R and +R don't work in all DVD players.

But how do the formats themselves differ? What makes one -R and the other +R? And why aren't they interchangeable?

"But how do the formats themselves differ?"

For the data (which can be DVD video!), the format of the data must be to a standard. This is not the difference.

"What makes one -R and the other +R?"

The media, the drive's electronics and on the surface coding.

"And why aren't they interchangeable?"

Two standards committees. You'll see one more from China as far as I can tell since there are license fees to make a DVD player. Some want a royalty free standard.

most DVD players take DVD+R or DVD-R?

I was curious as to which format most DVD players favor : DVD+R or DVD-R?

Blockbuster would go out of business b/c of overhead if they had to stock DVD+R and DVD-R movies to accomodate everyone.

Used to be the minus edge.

Today, the OLDER the machine is, the more picky it will be as to which. But newer DVD players tend to play both.

There are no reliable statistics which is better for older players so let's say 50% like DVD-R and the other DVD+R. Older DVD players rarely play any DVDRW media.

How does the media determine if it's to be -R or +R? What is the criteria?

"How does the media determine if it's to be -R or +R? What is the criteria?"

It's a similar chemical and process to what makes a CD-R differ from a CD-R/W. In short, the chemicals and process varies.

You might want to read this:
http://www.dvdplusrw.org/Article.asp?mid=0&sid=1&aid=1

I realize it's on a pro-plus R/RW site, and may be "plus" biased, but I don't think it's misleading. Personally, I like the fact that +RW disks don't require finalization and can be edited and re-edited easily.

Anyway, read for yourself and ponder the mind-boggling world of DVD technology as I did last year.

Good luck.
