DVD+R 16X problem

Mar 29, 2006 1:24AM PST

The blank Media I have is Memorex DVD+R 16x.

For some reason my LITE-ON SOHW-1633S does not recognize the blank media. I burned some videos on these discs previously. I can watch DVD movies too.

LITE-ON has updated firmware but seeing as mine is an OEM version (eMachines). I don't want to force the new firmware.

I read that Memorex DVD+Rs are crap-o-la. Should I buy a different brand and/or a slower speed say 8x or 4x?

I have TDK CD-Rs that burn no problem.

Some find that using another make media cured it. Seems cheaper than a new drive.

Always try that lens cleaner....

Sony DVD-R
Mar 30, 2006 8:09AM PST

I bought some of these Sony ones and they worked great. But I don't know if they worked because of the -R (the others were +R) or the brand is different.

I guess I have new +R coasters. ^_^

Buy a New DVD Drive...
Nov 1, 2006 12:16AM PST

I had a similar problem with my LiteOn drive. I would rip and burn DVDs on the drive and maybe 3 out of 5 would have skips and pauses in the last 1/8th of the DVD. As you can imagine, this was really irritating during movies. After months of searching for software problems/incompatibilities/incorrect settings, updating the drive firmware, trying all sorts of different DVD media, I saw a Deal of the Day on CNet's website for a Pioneer DVD+-R internal drive for $35. I thought, gee, for $35, I wonder if the problem is my burner? So I bought it, installed it, and I haven't had a single DVD burn with skips/pauses. The LiteOn drives are junk in my opinion. I use Ritek Printable DVD-Rs I get from supermediastore.com. If you are ready to tear your hair out, just replace the drive. $35 is a small price to pay if your drive is junk.

liteon will not read cd
Nov 15, 2006 3:15PM PST

I have two of these in my pc and all of a sudden both of them won't read my music CD's (factory record or burned by that burner). I loaded in the latest firmware and that fixed it for about 15 minutes then it wouldn't read CD's again. This started happening about 11-12-06. So either there's a virus out there or Microsoft put some new patch that is causing this. I have XP home with SP2.
The fact that both stopped working at the same time (I bought them 6 months apart) is interesting. Also why after applying the latest firmware, why would they both work but stop working after 15 minutes?

About on what date did this start happening to you ???

HOT!
Nov 15, 2006 10:15PM PST

I found a machine like that. The builder had the units pancaked on top of each other and the drives were running hot. About every year they would replace drives. There's a lesson there.
