DVD problem with T6212

May 18, 2005 12:33AM PDT

K, So i got this baby about a week ago and am pretty happy so far. One problem:

So I'll pop in a DVD, it boots up fine and begins playing. I can skip tracks with no problem, but as soon as I fast-forward (search) I will receive an error message and am forced to quit. this happens with both Windows Media Player AND Interactual Player!! Any help would be appreciated!

how would I go about getting an updated driver for my player? On emachines' website?

I did

Ok.. So I searched for updated drivers, none were found, it seems I have the most recent. I also checked for Windows Media pLayer updates, there were none found.

Details?

Such searches are not done with "Update Driver" push buttons. Same for software updates. Tell how you checked.

Also, since it is under warranty, call it in. They get calls like yours all the time and will either have the fix handy or tell you its being worked on.

how i searched for driver
May 18, 2005 1:30AM PDT

i checked for driver by going to my device manager, and windows automatically searched for it and found nothing. is there a better way???

That rarely works.

That worked for me less than 1% of the time that I call that a demo button. It would be great if it worked.

To find drivers, I go to the makers web site and look. Try that.

What did the phone to their support turn up?

Use your warranty and call tech support.

It might help if you don't keep the error message secret.

the error message
May 18, 2005 1:28AM PDT

the error message is just one of those "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". Then it has the usual "send error report" stuff.

How to fix Windows Media player shutting down
May 18, 2005 4:49AM PDT

I have the T6212 and had that same issue. On using the Windows Media Player, I'd get the error message, ''Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience''.

What happened is that XP Service Pak 2 comes with this ''Data Execution Prevention'' (DEP) feature now. The info reads, ''Data Execution Prevention (DEP) helps protect against damage from viruses and other security threats. Unlike a firewall or antivirus program, DEP does not help prevent harmful programs from being installed on your computer. Instead, it monitors your programs to determine if they use system memory safely. To do this, DEP software works alone or with compatible microprocessors to mark some memory locations as ''non-executable''. If a program tries to run code?malicious or not?from a protected location, DEP closes the program and notifies you.''

I turned off the DEP for Windows Media Player and haven't had a problem since. (WARNING; MAKE SURE YOU USE A FIREWALL BEFORE DISABLING THIS). You can use ZoneAlarm, a free download from http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

To access and disable DEP, do the following;
1. Right click the ''My Computer'' icon (access from Start menu) and click ''Properties''
2. Proceed to the ''Advanced'' tab
3. Under the ''Performance'' frame, select ''Settings''
4. This opens the ''Performance Options'' tab and then select the ''Data Execution Prevention'' tab
5. Select the radio button ''Turn on DEP for all programs except those I select:''
6. Select ''Add'' and browse for the Windows Media Player file ''wmplayer.exe''
7. A warning will display advising you against doing this (this is why the firewall is important). Select ''OK'' and you're golden.

You can also add the Interactual Player to the list as well, although I HATE their application and refuse to use that crap. PowerDVD is SO much better, but some films like Terminator 2 won't run on anything but Interactual - that's a discussion for another thread.... <smile>

Thanks but it didnt work!

Hi, I tried the DEP disable but I am still having the same problem. Again, the DVD player works fine and everything; it's only when I try to fast forward or rewind (search) that the error happens. Skipping track to track works fine, and I can even grab the slider and drop it to search that way. Any other suggestions?? :/

Suggest you don't fast forward or rewind...<smile>

...just kidding.

Sorry, though, I really don't know beyond the info I gave you. I might be able to point you in the right direction though.

1. Try to determine if it's the player(s) or the drive (in other words, based on what you've said, it could be (A) one of the players (either InterActual or Windows Media Player) OR (B) the DVD drive itself)
2. Try updating the driver for the DVD drive. (Like Bob said earlier in this thread, this rarely works/finds an update, but worth a shot)
3. Try uninstalling (A) InterActual first and then try it on Windows Media Player without that running (possibly a conflict between that and Windows Media Player - I doubt it, but again, worth a shot) and if that don't work (B) uninstall Windows Media Player and try it with InterActual. (Don't worry, they're both easilly recovered/downloadable - InterActual will download itself sometimes whether you want it to or not!)
4. Check if you have other media players installed and if there might be a conflict(i.e. QuickTime, WinDVD, Real Player - again, probably not a problem, but ya never know...)
5. Here's a link to Windows Media Player; http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/usingplayer.aspx?locale=409&geoid=f4&version=10.0.0.3646&userlocale=409 (again, don't know if the issue is WMP, IA or the drive, so don't know if that will help)
6. By the way, does it do it with all DVD's or is there one in particular?

Hope this gets you started...sorry couldn't be more help. Sad

Good luck!
