DVD player won't work

Nov 5, 2010 4:00PM PDT

Running HP Pavilion dv7-1245dx, windows vista.
Tried to play a store bought dvd and nothing happened, I can hear the player turning. Tried it in window media player and HP Media Smart DVD player. Also when I tried to do a dvd back-up for my files I kept getting "Can Not Format Disk". Is there any way I can do some kind of system check on the dvd player? Thanks for any input.

I have a few bootable CDs like "Linux" with Damn Small Linux being a fast download if you don't have such handy worth mentioning. If I can't boot a bootable CD (I test this by booting on other machines) then I try the usual CD lens cleaner and then I change out the drive. There are folk that want the drive repaired but today this is not done. You change the drive.

I didn't write about changing the bios boot order. You can do that research.

Got it working, I didn't think about the lens cleaner, I didn't have any so I opened the door and sprayed with canned air. Put in audio cd and it worked then tried a DVD movie and it worked. Tomorrow I will try to back up my files on DVD, hope that works. Thanks for your input.
