DVD on R/RW Drive

by Pupil / November 20, 2004 5:55 AM PST

Will DVD movies run on a Samsung CD- R/RW SW-252F drive?
I have been told different things i.e that it will run if I buy a DVD decoder program but I have also been told that the laser used in a CD data drive is not the same as that used to read DVD disks.

What is the correct answer?

Neither is correct, but assuming there's no DVD-ROM abilities in the drive, the person who says it won't work was closer to correct.

DVDs are coated with a different material on the recorded side which allows for the higher density of data. The laser is the same, it's just the CD drive doesn't know how to read this.

That being said, you'll still need a DVD decoder of some sort to make use of the raw data.

Many thanks for your advice. If I understand you correctly there is no point in spending the money to buy a decoder program as it will not work even if I have a DVD decoder program - have I got this right?

Yes. However, many/most retail DVD-ROM drives come with some sort of DVD decoding program (PowerDVD or WinDVD), so you can always consider that option.

Meet the drop-resistant Moto Z2 Force

The Moto Z2 Force is really thin, with a fast processor and great battery life. It can survive drops without shattering.
