DVD not seen any more

May 1, 2004 5:32PM PDT

Windows 98SE - Athlon - 512M RAM

For no apparent reason, my DVD is not seen by my computer any more. I just used it earlier last month to run Turbo Tax, but yesterday, when I got ready to load a new program, my DVD was no longer listed in My Computer. The only thing I see with a problem, when I go to Device Manager in Control Panel, is I have a yellow diamond next to my Primary and Secondary IDE controllers - the Standard Dual PCI controller is OK. It says there is a driver problem with the controllers. It seems to be a "can't set to there from here" problem. I guess I need to reload the drivers, but I need the DVD to run the CD with the drivers programs. I am not even sure this is what is causing the trouble. Now what do I do?

You are probably on the right track with the noted problem at the IDE controller. Try removing the device from Device Manager, then a reboot to rediscover it.

That was one of the first things I tried. I also unplugged the connections from the MB and the DVD and reconnected, just to be sure they were in good. The power connections are fine - I can tray a DVD and eject, but the computer just does not know it is there.

The drivers on the CD are likely to be out of date.

Since you have internet access, go get the latest motherboard drivers and install those.
