DVD not playing in full screen on widescreen

Sep 6, 2008 7:04AM PDT

when ever I am watching a movie from a DVD, I've notice that the movies still have the black bars as if I was watching it on a 4:3 tv. I did look at the back of the DVD case and it said it was anamorphic widescreen 2.35:1. Does that mean it is not 16:9 and that is the reason the movie does not take up the full screen? I know that it is not my tv's zoom because it is set on standard which shows the video as it comes. Can anyone explain this to me?

Let's do the math.
Sep 6, 2008 7:10AM PDT

2.35:1 = x:9 --> x = 21.15
2.35:1 = 16Love --> x = 6.8
That leaves (9-6.Cool/2 = 1.1 on top and at the bottom if you want to see the full width.

Bars in HDTV

If the bars on on the sides your HDTV is not set to 16:9. What brand HDTV do you have? I don't know what "standard" means.
