DVD Drive problem...

Feb 29, 2004 1:40PM PST

Hi,

I have a machine with a cdrw drive, and a dvd drive.

My hd is partitioned aas c: and d:, so my "optical" drives are e: and f:

e: should be my burner, and I know it works.

f: Herein, lies the problem. Any DVD or CD I put in this drive is never recognized. Something is messed up and I don't know what it is.

I am sure I set the cdrw to master, and the dvd to slave. What could be wrong? Even device manager recognizes the fact that the drive is there. I just cant use it.

Please help...

Ciao...

Hi folks,

Can someone review this problem and try to give me an answer?

I have both the CDRW drive and the DVD drive on the same IDE cable and channel. Could that be the problem?

The DVD drive, which is recognized in Device Manager, will not read any disks at all. Just like it is not there. Error reading drive F: is all I get. Or is it: F: is not ready. Something to this effect.

Please help,

Ciao...

Did the DVD drive ever work? The most common computer failure these days is the CD or DVD drive, they tend to fail quite easily. ALl you can do when this happens is replace them, though you can try using a cleaner that usually doesn't work.

Re:DVD Drive problem... My recipe.
Mar 7, 2004 9:48PM PST

I will not enter into any discussion about this. I have my recipe and am sticking to it.

For a dual CDRW/DVD, I...

1. Update the firmware of both CDRW and DVD.
2. Fit an 80 conductor IDE cable.
3. Set both drives to Cable Select (CS).
4. On the host, motherboard drivers and BIOS are updated.
5. The CDRW software is updates.

I never have this issue with the above plus the usual oversized power supply unit.

I would say it's probably dead. That happened to me before too. In fact, my DVD drive is just about dead as it is now. The Cable select option is VERY important, as Profitt said.
