DVD Disc Repair

May 15, 2009 5:52AM PDT

Does anyone have any advice on what would be good to use to try to repair scratched DVDs? Several of my DVDs are scratched and I hate to go out and replace them. I have tried using a Disc Doctor, but haven't had much luck.

Deep scratches= replace

If disc doctor doesn't do the trick, I don't know of any other remedy besides replacing them unfortunately. Deep scratches are bad news for DVD media Sad.

One of the best ways to remove scratches from a DVD or CD is to polish lightly with "Brasso" liquid metal polish.

Be VERY Careful!

Brasso is extremely abrasive - if you try it, use only the lightest pressure. The silver equivalent is less abrasive (it's called "Silvo" or "Duraglit" here in the UK but I've no idea anywhere else).

A friend has successfully used a trick inherited from his mother - he used toothpaste (the smooth sort, not the gritty type). It is a very mild abrasive but use only the lightest pressure.

If you do manage to read the disk, make a copy immediately - better yet, make two, then you will have a backup and be sure to store the copies in a dark place when not in use - home recorded CDs and DVDs are not as robust as factory stamps.

DVD repar and Cleaning
May 26, 2009 1:36PM PDT

When clean dvd's or cd's I just use a little water and a soft wash cloth. The salutions that come with disc doctor and other repair kits and actualy do more harm then good. U sualy the salutions are mostly made up of alcohol also ovber time that can breack down the protective coating on your dvd's and cd's. If you have deep scracthes then you will have to replace the disc for ones that don't affect the pafermance disc just put water on it and rub jently up and down on the disc with a soft warsh rag. I have a cloth just for that I take my rag and use 2 fabric sheets in the laundry to keep it nice and soft. No need to pay for cleaners. Hope this helps.
