DVD decoder

I used spybot and it made me have to repartition my harddrive and reinstall XP. Now I can't play a dvd! It says I don't have a decoder, and I have to pay for a new one. I called Dell and they gave me a link to an update for my dvd drive, to no avail. I obviously had a dvd decoder before, it worked before I had to reinstall everything. Is there a dvd decoder for free for a toshiba dvd rom C2612? Has anyone else had this problem?

You need to comb your Dell CDs to see if they provide a DVD player. There are license fees so no freebie for Windows.

If you mean by "decoder" the use of proper "codecs" in order to play a DVD, then you should have if orginally part of the Dell system, one of the driver/imstall CDs. If not, then Dell should provide one via thier support website once you give your system SN#, etc., especially if under warranty, even if not, that's part of the system. If not the drivers, just some player s/w, check those install CDs again, you do have them? It gets harder to get it if out of warranty. But, if you just want to play a DVD movie, use VLC, its free and works great, though simple. Checkout: http://www.videolan.org/ and get the OS you need.
