DVD copies of DVD's!

Aug 28, 2006 12:07PM PDT

I have just recently copied my children's old dance VHS tapes onto DVD-R discs - required by the VCR-DVD recorder machine that I have. I would now like to make a copy of one of these dance DVD discs to another DVD disc on my computer - how do I go about that? I tried Nero using a straight copy but it says there's not enough space - I tried Shrink and Decrypter but nothing seems to work? Incidentally, I'm not very knowledgeable on all of this -= a lot of my success(?) is by luck not design!

Thanks is advance

Still not working
Aug 29, 2006 2:12AM PDT

On the computer, I have a Sony DVD Rom and an ATAPI DVD-DD - my original VHS to DVD recorder is a Pioneer DFVR-RT501 - and I am using DVD-R discs. When I try to record on Nero Express 6 it says there's not enough space - Data to be written is 4,489 MB and Data available is 4,488MB. When I try DVD Shringk 3.2 - when I click on Open Disc - it tells he there is no disc in the D Drive - when there is one. Today it said more - "The Volume does contain a recognised file system".

Thanks again for your help

Which leaves us with a question.

What is the "the VCR-DVD recorder machine that I have."

Nero or other CD/DVD software should be able to copy it, but shrink depends on it being a DVD standard recording and I wonder if it was something else like DVD-VR.

Ah!
Aug 29, 2006 8:37AM PDT

OK I read thru my literature on the Pioneer DVD Recorder and VCR - I see it sometimes talks about when recording in the VR mode. Format modes used on each disc - with DVD-RW Ver.1.0,1.1 and 1.2 - it uses a VR mode. But I recorded on a DVD-R which uses the Video mode. I also noted that it said that discs recorded using a personal computer mya not be usable on this unit due to the setting of the application software used to create the disc. Am a on the right tracki?

IF it turns out that this unit does not allow me to use Shrink on my computer to make 2nd copies - how do I go about making 2nd copies of my already copied DVDs?

Thanks

Still won't work!!

Went into Nero and tried every possible combination - that is all the types of ways you can copy - it rejects all the time. If I go into Drive D (where my original is), it tells me it doesn't recognise the media. Am I just not getting something here?

Check on...

doom9.org for more clues. The DVD is not a normal DVD or standard recording or your DVD drive is aging and can't deal with it.

Did it ever work?

Never worked
Aug 30, 2006 6:23AM PDT

The DVD Drive is only about a year old - it works fine with DVD's not copied from my DVD-VCR machine. The DVd's copied from my Pioneer DVD-VCR machine have never worked.

The question never answered was...

Make and MODEL of the pioneer machine. While I'm not holding out much hope I re-read some replies and didn't find the model number.

Sometimes we find details if we get the details.

Wishing for the best outcome.

Played the DVD on other DVD machines
Aug 30, 2006 7:09AM PDT

Just thought I would check this further - I played the copied DVD on other DVD machines to see if they would read it. 2 of the machines won't. Admittedly they are older DVD players (4 years) and the Pioneer is a new one. Don't know if this would affect that - but it's another interesting point!!

YES!! Another problem!
Aug 30, 2006 1:37PM PDT

YES!! Thank you, thank you! I finalised the disc and it works on other DVD's and the computer programs all accept it! Another problem though - when I put in my copied DVD (again just a family movie, not pre-authored, etc)- and use Shrink combined with Nero for burning a 2nd copy. The burning happens but when I try to play it on a DVD machine, it doesn't work! I feel like I'm slowly unravelling a very large ball of wool!!

Thanks so much for your patience

Not all DVDs play on all players.
Aug 30, 2006 9:40PM PDT

I don't have a cure for that. I did however gift 2 players that were either nonplayers of recorded media or balky at best. That solved 99.99% of the problems at home. I'm sure others won't do that.

Got the answer!
Aug 31, 2006 8:25AM PDT

I got the answer from club.cdfreaks.com(think you referred me there before!!) they said only use DVD Decryptor in ISO read mode and then ISO write mode. Not to use Shrink or Nero. And it worked! So I've come to the end of the ball of wool. Thanks so much for all your help - you guys are SO much help - I don't know what we did before you were invented!
