Question

DVD/CD drive will not respond

Jan 10, 2014 5:36PM PST

Hi there
I am trying as Administrator to open my F:\ DVD drive in my Win 7 64-bit laptop. Double clicking the F:DVD/CD Drive in My Computer submenu, in which I have inserted a cd, it will show the following message:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item".

On the other hand when I insert a CD in the DVD/CD tray , it starts to play it without any problem. I tried to update the driver but it tells me that is up to date.
So what I am asking is why I cannot access my drive by just clicking it?
My laptop is a HP Pavillon with a HP OEM DVD/CD player, win 7 as I said.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kiriakos

Answer
This needs a lot of "detail."

For example I encountered a new user and they asked the same question. They can see the drive letter and it would not open.

So I slipped in a data DVD and then opened the disc to show it's contents. (No it didn't auto open)

They are right it's a design from decades ago. On an Apple the drive icon may vanish if there is no reason for it to show.

-> There are other reasons but I think I'll start with this one.

One that was properly written and closed like a standard, or one done in UDF? Is it a rewritable disc?

Commercial CD
Jan 11, 2014 1:49AM PST

I use a commercial music CD and if I use the tray it plays automatically, if I try to run it thru the drive it will not open.

But I now have a more serious problem with the operating system. It will boot directly to the safe mode instead the usual way. Without hitting the F8 it loads the windows files and goes to Safe Mode.I will open another thread about it. I think my laptop is messed up in some way.

By coincidence a few hours ago I had trouble not being able to go into Safe Mode. Then I went into the registry and checked under boot the Safe Mode setting. That's why I was booting directly into the Safe Mode. Now I unchecked this setting and everything to the moment seems running smoothly.
I thank you and I hope this is the end of it.
