DVD Camcorder Novice needs help with Decoding & burning DVD

Jun 26, 2009 2:31PM PDT

Hi All,

I hope someone can help me here, I'm creating this thread from work so if I'm light on some of the technical details I will check back and supply these but I wanted to get the thread going.

I own a Panasonic camcorder that records to DVD-R/RW/+RW etc. The camcorder works fine and we've captured family videos on the discs. Since we were learning, some of the discs were in VR-Mode and some in standard video where the disc was finalized. At this stage we don't do any editing of the video since we're interested in burning and compiling discs.

I downloaded a trial version of Nero 9 I believe and after a couple of coasters, I managed to read in the necessary *.vob files from the discs and burn a DVD that could be played back on PC and the home DVD. However, when I was decoding I noticed that the time and date information that was present on the recorded discs on the camcorder was not transfered during the decoding. I would like to keep this information for future prosperity so we can look back at the date of discs etc. So my questions are:

1. Can anyone recommend a free program that can decode or transfer the *.vob files onto DVD for burning while maintaining date and time information? Or can this be done with Nero that I didn't realize?

2. Is it possible to add many videos onto one DVD using this free program and/or Nero? We have probably 4 or 5 discs with short videos on and I'd be looking to compile onto one disc. If I remember correctcly, Nero 9 gave me an option to add a little menu screen for multiple clips/videos.

Eventually I'd like to do a little video editing but I appreciate that this would most likely require the purchase of a reasonable video editing package.

Thank you so much in advance for your help and suggestions!

Mark

while maintaining date and time information? Or can this be
Jun 27, 2009 12:10AM PDT

Looking at MPEG-2 (the standard) I can't see where this information is standard in the encoding. We do have (far too) long discussions about date, time and manipulations of so let's just get down to what I use and you decide if that helps.

I use a handful of FREE titles which you can look for. I may not give the links (since I've done so many times.)

1. For ripping the DVD I never bother. I just copy over the .VOB files.

2. For TRANSCODING the VOB if I must I use Super from http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

3. For clipping up the video I might use VIRTUAL DUB. This is not an offer to write a tutorial.

4. For creating a DVD using these files I might use DVD FLICK.

5. And finally IMGBURN is my choice for recording the final .ISO files.

Again, this is just a short list of the FREE titles I can use to get from common DVD camcorder stock to a compilation. No offer of tutorials is here. But it does work. I've done it too many times.

-> About that date.time, you would have to tell a lot more where that information is. Many are still confused about what they see on the camcorder versus what ends up on your video dvd.

Combining videos from vob files with thumbnails onto 1 disc
Jun 28, 2009 7:56AM PDT

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the reply; I realized I got confused between decoding and just copying over the files.

I used Copy2DVD to load in the vob and ifo files and then burn. It was easy to do and what was pleasing was that the time and date was underneath the video file that you press play on your dvd remote to view.

This leads me to another question that I'm hoping someone can help me with:

When I copy over the Vob, ifo files and burn it works fine. However, I have discs where I have say, 2 or 3 'files' (as denoted by the thumbnail on my camcorder when played back) that are mixed in one disc; I have videos of my son playing in marching band and then other videos of him playing in marching band on another disc. How can I combine these related videos onto one disc to burn? When I copy over the vob files I'm assuming the thumbnail information is made for each disc. I'd love to be able to generate the thumbnail menu for all the related band videos on one disc without having to mix up random videos.

Hope that makes sense!

Thanks
