DVD Camcorder Movie Software? Few Responses

Jul 25, 2007 2:23AM PDT

I posted the following in 2 other CNet forums, with little response. Maybe the post is too darn long and involved, so don't read beyond this if you don't have the time... I just want to know what software is best for capturing/copying video from my Sony DCR-DVD505 camcorder (Vegas +DVD won't retain the Dolby 5.1 audio).

Which Movie Software?

Movie Software

My I/OMagic DVD Lightscribe burner wouldn't etch images to the LightScribe disc face, so I returned it and got an HP LightScribe one after several weeks of exchanging emails with techs trying to fix the I/OMagic. The I/OMagic came with Nero trial software that upgraded to Nero 7 while I had it. When I installed the HP, I tried using the Nero 7 to etch LightScribe label images, and it still didn't work. I installed only the "SureThing" LightScribing part off the Nero OEM disc that came with the HP; the SureThing software did etch an image to a disc, so the original glitch must have been in Nero's Cover Designer label making software.

Now I want to compile and edit the videos I shot to DVD-RW minidiscs with our new Sony DCR-DVD 505 camcorder. I managed to muddle through one minidisc transfer before the Nero trial expired (30 days), but now without the paid-for version, it won't let me move videos into its nerovision 4 movie maker. It won't capture video if I plug the camcorder into the USB computer port, and it won't access video if I put the minidisc directly in the computer's DVD-Rom either. The whole thing was supposed to be easy, but it's a pain. Nero's tech support was several days in responding to each of my emails re. the LightScribe problem, and that helped take up 3/4 of the 30 day trial!

I reckon I can dump the Nero 7, and load the Nero OEM disc (Nero Express 6.6, etc.) and start all over, but my experience with the Nero so far is that it appears to be a pretty bloated, lumbering program loaded with a lot of features I'll never use, and the tech support is slow and questionable (I/OMagic techs were quicker and more attentive). I have yet to load up the Sony Picture Package (also contains Nero Express 6) disc because others in forums have said Picture Package is a joke. I saw Sony's Vegas DVD+ at Costco, and figured it oughta be compatible with the camera, but then noticed fine print on the box that said it converts Dolby 5.1 to stereo! A waste of the DCR DVD505's audio ability. Costco also had Roxio's EMC 9, which seems a good possibility, though, like Nero, it appears bloated with excesses I don't need.

I just want to capture, from the camera or from a disc, the videos, patch together a simple edited movie from them, and that's it. Nothing fancy with voice overs or music (at least for the time being).

My question is, with all the software out there, including the Windows Movie Maker in my XP OS, which I can't seem to get my videos into, and the Dell Roxio VideoWave movie software that came with my computer (ditto), what in your experience is my best option? My 13 DVD-RW minidiscs are all full and need transferring so I can shoot more summer video. I know I can just run straight DVD copy burns onto 12cm discs okay, to free up the minidiscs, but I'd like to edit them first instead. A lot of what I read on the forums is over my head, and more than I have time to learn. Will the Picture Package (Nero Express 6) be adequate? Or should I stick with the Nero OEM (Express 6.6) that came with the HP drive? No doubt, Nero will test my mettle again with a trial upgrade; it just seems like such an unecessarily huge software package. I bought the DVD camcorder because I thought it would be easy to computer-edit. Yeah, right.

Sorry.

While I'm more than willing to share what I've learned about this your post seems a little "demanding." That is you write to not reply if I don't have the time.

If sharing is not acceptable or my offer of ideas is not good enough just say so and this post and replies will vanish.

-> Here's my first thought. Maybe you have a solution in the latest Nero even though it's "lumbering."

My thought is that many don't have optimum machines for video editing and bristle at the thought they need some nice dual or quad core CPU with 2GB ram to make video work fly. Please tell us a little about the host machine. Maybe something is just a little off and we can find a quick fix.

-> Here's thought number two. Look up the Windows version of HANDBRAKE. It's free and has been helpful in some rip and conversion of video dvd content. I can't tell if you'll be able to use it or if you'll label it a dog.

Final thoughts. In spite of all the warnings in this forum about DVD camcorders people do buy them. I still prefer MiniDV over firewire and will stick to that suggestion any day of the week.

Best of luck and hope you are amiable to sharing ideas on the issue and problems.

I didn't say not to reply if you didn't have time. I said not to read the long original posting if you didn't have time. There was no negative intent; I just assumed I got few responses in the other forums because of the long "question", so this time I put forth a basic quiry at the lead in. If a reader wanted more info they could have read on.

The PC is a Dell Dimension 4550, Pentium 4, 512 Ram, 2.4 Ghz, XP Home Ed. SP2, 120 GB HD about 25% full, Windows Movie Maker preinstalled at factory in 2002, Dell Movie Studio which is Roxio VideoWave Movie Creator, and Nero 7 Essentials (Nero Vision 4 for movie editing). Can I copy directly from my DVD-ROM (using finalized camcorded miniDVD-RW) to 12cm disc on the HP DVD burner? Yeah, easy when I tried it with Nero.

Here's the deal: I spent weeks trying to get Nero to fix a software glitch and as a result wasted most of the "trial period" for Nero's software before I actually tried video editing with it. I made one simple movie to 12 cm DVD off an original mini-RW one run in the PC's DVD-ROM, before the trial expired. That movie has several annoying split-second stops and starts in it that don't exist on the original or straight-copied discs. I cannot so far capture video using the camera as a drive with USB 2.0 connection, but haven't run the Sony Picture Package disc yet (everyone said it was worthless). I have to upgrade to full Nero 7 to make any more movies, so I'm just asking for advice on what software alternatives I have besides that.

Some like Roxio 7, so I assume Roxio 9 would work. Some with standard audio like Sony's Vegas DVD+, but the one I saw in the store would convert my Dolby 5.1 to stereo. There may be a Vegas version that retains Dolby 5.1. Plus, the new HP DVD burner came with Nero Original Equipment Mfr. Suite (Nero Vision Express 3 in that is the likely movie software) which I haven't installed and tried yet, figuring it is an earlier version of Nero 7, and will trial/expire also anyway.

And, yes, I read the warnings for months before opting to go DVD camcorder. Others may consider me foolish for buying DVD, but I did my research. A lot of things factored into my decision, and I certainly was aware of the negatives I balanced against the positives. In my case the plus side was heavier, and I couldn't be more pleased with the camcorder's performance - the few negatives to it I have been able to adapt to. Being able to go directly to a given scene via thumbnail selection instead of waiting on wind/rewind is a major plus for me, and I haven't encountered a lot of the things naysayers forewarned about. At this juncture, I just need input from those with DVD to DVD movie editing software.

I will check out Handbrake.

Regarding LightScribe.

It has been problematic for some. Let me share that I don't have this issue but... I have this simple rule. I never install any PACKET WRITING SOFTWARE. I even disable XP's native CD recording. This is likely why I never have such an issue so here's an article about it and how to disable.

As to Nero, again my choice is to bypass the offer to install drag to disk or InCD. Too unreliable for me.

As to your machine, it's a fine machine but it will seem slow at video work. The only solution I fear is to switch to decaf and be very patient.

It will also stress the power supply and heatsinks. Many of these machines need a thorough cleaning of heatsinks, fans, case and such. This helps in most cases. If not we try the time honored "leave the cover off."

The P4 at 2.5 GHz (most) didn't even have the HT option. Given you might find a 3.0 HT P4 and new heatsink and fan for under 99 bucks this may be a cheap cure for some speed gains.

Best of luck. And here's a video about power supply upgrades.

And it's a Dell!
