I'll write "troublesome".

Even today, when you install XP SP2 which is the latest Windows you find there is no SATA support. Install from a SATA CD/DVD drive sounds like far too much trouble. I bet only gurus will get this to work.

Go with PATA for now if you want this to work.

It's tough enough without adding SATA to CD and DVD drives. Get yourself one or two of the NEC3550A and enjoy. I used to only buy Plextor but the technology is moving so fast and their prices are pretty steep so I decided to try the NECs. So far so good ... In fact I have three or four of them and just put one in a USB enclosure 2.0 and tested it by copying a music CD, created a DVD with about 3GB data and played music CD on it afterwards.

Your $$, your call...PATA vs SATA NECs are doing the job nicely for me for now.
