"For some reason in windows media player I get a picture but no sound when trying to play a movie. "

WMP doesn't play DVDs without a lot of help. For now, use DVD player software.

1. NO SPYWARE ALLOWED. Tell what tools you use to detect and remove.

2. TURN ON DMA. Just like Microsoft to turn on DMA by first turning it off, the procedure is noted at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/ide-dma.mspx

Many just look and see DMA if available, but again the Microsoft penchent to turn this on by turning it off and on is written:

"To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager

1.

Open Device Manager.

2.

Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.

3.

Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.

4.

In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already shows "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings. That is:
?

Change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click OK.
?

Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available."

3. Set the video colors to 32 bit or MILLIONS of colors.

Best of luck,

bob

Forum tip then...
Oct 15, 2004 5:51AM PDT

You didn't tell much about the host machine.

Tip: If you are asking for help to troubleshoot a computer-related problem, please be sure to include all the necessary information (ie: operating system, model number, hardware, software, etc) that will help others identify your problem for a speedy resolution.

You may have installed some Intel Accelerators or something is not installed and this is why the Microsoft instructions don't apply.

Best of luck,

bob
