DVD burn error message

I have a Gateway XP media center edition.When I attempt to burn,say pictures or recorded program to DVD,a little box w/a white progress bar will,telling me it may take a while,& in the meantime do something
else.Without fail the Sonics solution bar will shoot all the way over to the right,with the error message,with no explaination.
I can burn CDs but not DVDs.Any clues?Ideas?
