Because XP knows nothing about DVD recorders or blank DVD media. Nothing in this OS supports those items.
To get around this I use DVD software items like Nero, Roxio, CDBURNERXP. Expecting this OS to get this right is wishful thinking.

Legal XP-pro- fully patched, etc. Comp Assoc A/V, Toshiba R5272 DVD-CD burner, etc, etc. windows just started reporting dvd blanks (+ & - Both) as CDR blanks. Firmware updated, Roxio burning software sees size correctly, as does NTI, but not Windows. Attempt to use Burnatonce to use an .ISO, size is misreported and Burnatonce errors out- media mismatch?. I know about the upper and lower filters for optical drives (ie: regedit and remove those keys-reboot-and the drive is functional again) but this has me stumped. Don't exactly know when it happened, nor do I have another drive to do the swap test. Any ideas? I can make it work, but I'd like to know why windows is being a silly booger. TIA (BTW MB Intel d865, P4@3.4, 2Gb ram, 600w PS)
