I have a compaq presario s3100nx with windows xp home edition and microsoft office 97.

When I open an excel file a message box appears "a document with the same name is already open. To open the 2nd document either close the document that's currently open, or change the name of one of the documents."

I've changed names but the same message appears when I open the changed file. I've tried to arrange the open files but only get the one that's open. It seems like I have a "shadow" file that duplicates everything I do.

I've run out of ideas to solve the problem.

It's a known issue. In short, Office 97 is not without problem on XP.

It does seem to run, but you get this and other errors. Microsoft is not planning to patch or repair this issue.

I use Open Office instead for my personal machines without issue. http://www.openoffice.org
