Over the summer, I bought a new computer: a Dell. My old one, which I purchased from a local dealer for $100, had contracted a nasty virus; I eventually got rid of it thanks to AVG and the like, but the computer still wasn't performing as well as I wanted. So like any self-respecting, on-his-way-to-the-poorhouse college student, I went to Wal-Mart and bought the most affordable deal they offered at the time. It was a Dell Inspiron 531 with Windows XP and an AMB Sempron processor. I love the computer, and it lives up to every expectation I had...except one: none of my web-based third-party programs work.
I'm connected wirelessly to a Belkin Wireless G network, and I can get on the Internet and surf for hours! However, when I try to update my virus definitions for AVG, it can't connect to the server. When I try to use Digsby to manage my social networks and my IMs, it can't connect to the server. And when I try to log onto PokerStars, guess what - it can't connect to the server. Stand-alone IM platforms like AIM or Yahoo! Messenger work great. I'm certain that the problem lies with this computer because on my laptop, which connects wirelessly to the same network, all of the aforementioned programs can run without any problems.
I tried calling Dell Technical Support, but before I forked out money for what I still believe is a simple resolution, I decided to try this forum. My post on the Yahoo! Answers network didn't get any responses, so maybe I'll get better luck here. Is there anyone who can sympathize with or has heard of the issue I'm having? And if so, what can I do to fix it?
Thank you in advance for your help!
