Dual layer DVD's

Aug 15, 2005 5:29AM PDT

I know you need special disc's to record using a dual layer DVD recorder, are you able to also use regular DVD discs in these recorders?
Also, would my DVD player I use with my TV be able to read a dual layer disc? my DVD player is 2 years old?

In short.

"I know you need special disc's to record using a dual layer DVD recorder, are you able to also use regular DVD discs in these recorders?"

Yes. DVD (which I define as factory ready to play movie titles) should play fine if you have DVD player software. As to DVD recordable media, you have to check the drive specs, but single sided media as well as CDR and CDRW should be supported.

"Also, would my DVD player I use with my TV be able to read a dual layer disc? my DVD player is 2 years old?"

Test it. Some do, many don't. I gave away an older player since it was just too picky.

Watching a DL Disc?
Aug 25, 2005 2:06PM PDT

I burned some video from my computer to a DL Disk and I noticed it skips for about a minute or two then continues on again as if the disk if fine.
Is it normal for a DL disc to skip for a minute or so right in the middle of the disc?
Is that perhaps when it switches reading from one layer to the next?
Anybody else have this problem?

Some issue with the layer transition. When you created your DVD (you didn't tell how), the better DVD creation software allows you to finagle that transition a bit.

Since you didn't tell much, there isn't much to discuss.

In closing, try DVD-R or DVD+R and see which your player likes better.

Try something else.

What else do you have?

Try the other type media.

And... shrink it to fit on single layer.

Yes, I'm having the same problem.

I created a data set and stored it on my hard drive. I used a Sony DRU-800A recorder to record to a Memorex DVD+R DL disk. First I used Roxio to burn the DVD. It just stopped at the layer transition after a few seconds of jitter. I then tried burning another disk with Pinnacle's software. The first time through it got jittery for a few seconds to a minute then stopped. Next time I tried it got through the layer transition.

I posted to another forum and it was suggested that the Memorex media was at fault and to use Verbatim or Ridata (I think).

Yet another poster suggested that most set top players are not ready for the 'consumer' recorded dual layer disks yet.

I am considering breaking my video (all 3 hrs 25 min of it) up into three single layer disks.
