Question

Dual Cards With Nvidia

Sep 16, 2016 7:11PM PDT

I bought a Dell 8900 a few weeks back that advertised it ran on a GTX Geo Force 745 with 4GB of memory but it ran on a dual 530 Intel Graphics card with the 745 and no matter what you did you couldn't access the Nvidia control panel or select the GPU in the properties in the desktop's software icon - Tech support at Dell claimed I had the display plugged into the wrong video card but their was only one which was an HDMI - I see on the internet this problem has existed for a long time and was wandering if any one knew why ? Their wasn't any mention of the computer running on a 530 graphics card and I wouldn't of never bought it had it denoted that fact. I guess this was a big Windows 10 problem at one time but that was simply fixed by upgrading the Nvidia GPU !
Of course --- The 530 control panel was easily accessible -
Anybody know why this is still occurring !

If this is not what you want,

why not just return it. From what I see that was offer at BestBuy, it comes with one discrete GT730. So you are saying yours comes with a dual graphic 530 (integrated)?

Oh I see the 530 can also support...

multiple monitors. There should be other connections other than hdmi available..NO?

Nope -

Nope - Just the HDMI - You do see an HDMI and either the DVI or VGA connection together but their generally used for the same card I would think ! It's just so their users can use the older style LCD monitors -

Actually that sounds right.

Nvidia isn't on the hook for other than their own GPUs.

And if you mix, it can melt down. Now you know why I keep multiple cards all the same make and model.

If I was Nvidia

That sounds like a good policy to me ! If I was Nvidia I wouldn't want the bad reputation that's
conducive to such a massive restriction and continued association with their cards. Seems like the entire industry would of had this behind them by now !

I'm on some laptop with the 960m and Intel.

All works fine but and this is a biggy, the laptop maker sorted it all out before it got to me.

I seems to me you are not just thinking about...

multiple monitors but SLI/crossfire..correct? If that's the case then you need to look up the requirement for that.

Scalable Link Interface is technology
Sep 17, 2016 12:38PM PDT

You say - multiple monitors but SLI/crossfire -
No - it's a single monitor system and it's up to the board , video or computer manufacture to create this path or allowance with in their own technology !

SLI - Scalable Link Interface is technology that Nvdidia owns and bought from 3DFX at or around 1998 - I think crossfire is used by AMD -

I kind of thought at first that maybe a BIOS modification by Dell could fix the problem but considering they didn't even make an attempt to facilitate a solution to the problem , I kind of think now they probably sunk millions of dollars unto buying a vast amount of boards at a very low cost because of this very technical blunder. They should make for some good profits.

Unless you own software that doesn't support the 530 GPU you might not ever notice it until your return period is over.

A good Intel i7 processor runs so fast that if you haven't updated it a long while and your just a basic computer running email and Facebook , their probably not going to have any complaints until they have a need to access the Nvidia Control Panel or try to select the GPU in their programs properties.

Granny should like the system just fine and Dell has made the cost low enough where the non technical person won't have any complaints. At first any way !

I've lived in Asia and political favoritism and regulation for Huawei will probably become the next Chinese political agenda. I'm not so sure Dells heading in the right direction.
Their just not going to let Americans control their markets. Their pet and feed you like a puppy for a few years and then ......................... lol

Here, I'm not seeing the issue.
Sep 17, 2016 1:09PM PDT

But I don't have your PC. I have a plain old Asus ROG i7 960m run of the mill laptop.

That said, I've yet to see a work SLI that melded the Intel and AMD/Nvidia. There was a third party that tried that but it was gone over the next few years as GPU power surged forward again.

Now there was this fellow that plugged in their monitor on the Intel HDMI port and was forever cursing Intel and Nvidia. He was lost and could never be helped.

Hdmi
Sep 16, 2016 11:53PM PDT

There should be 2 hdmi ports.
One on the mobo and one on the 745.
Plug the monitor into the 745.
Enter the bios and turn off the 530 igp.

Can you now access the nvidea control panel?

If so leave it alone there is not much to be gained from coupling the two together.

Maybe EMC will be more efficent ?
Sep 17, 2016 7:59AM PDT

No - Theirs just ONE HDMI PORT - No you can't enter the Nvidia control panel because it denotes that access is denied because the 530 is running on the same computer.

They agreed to take the machine back and reimburse me all my money and as long as they do that I don't have any problem with Dell other than trying to figure out why this is still occurring and how to avoid it in the future !

For example - If I buy a computer with a GTX 1070 8GB video card do I have to ask the manufacture if it's primary video card will be the intel 530 and how do I get special permission to use the GTX 1070 8GB on my computer ! Do you have to petition the NSA to gain access to the Nvidia Card and it's control panel and settings or sign a waiver !

You say " There is not much to be gained from coupling the two together"
I agree and in this case it served no primary benefit at all but it did waste about a week of my time and it cost the manufacture a sell , their profit from that sell , their shipping cost and labor and the cost of having to re sell it and re ship it.

I guess their a Chinese company as of September 7th 2016 !
China regulatory approval clears way to complete transaction to combine Dell and EMC
New company to begin operating as Dell Technologies following close of the transaction
