dual boot: windows xp pro sp2, ubuntu linux 5.10

hello. i am inquiring why linux recognises windows in the same partition that linux is in. also, windows does not recognise linux in its own partition. i've placed both os's in seperate partitions. i did not use fdisk. please help.

AMD Opteron 146 2.0GHz Socket 939
2048MB DDR2 400 Ram PC 3200
Seagate 300GB 10k RPM hard drive
Microsoft Windows XP SP2, Ubuntu Linux 5.10

...with what program? From the XP CD, Partition Magic, something else?
