DTV Tuner For Analog TV

Nov 2, 2006 11:42PM PST

I'm thinking of getting this dtv tuner to connect to a 19" analog tv:

http://www.amazon.com/Grandtec-Tun-5000-Airvision-Receiver-Tuner/dp/B000HZJRSY/sr=8-2/qid=1162567366/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/002-9553620-1817662?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

Does anyone use this or another dtv tuner for receiving digital broadcasts on an analog tv? I know the quality will only be converted to 480i(not true high def or even true 480p digital) but wouldn't it be worth it just to receive broadcasts that look as good as dvds and also to watch primetime shows in widescreen format?

TYLER I THINK YOU SHOULD WAIT

Until you take the plunge and upgrade to a hi-def t.v. And now is the time to buy hi-def is very affordable Also most hi-def t.vs have a built in hi-def tuner, If your anolog t.v. picksa up local channels well your going to love the picture in digital 1080I. so I would not waste money on a tuner especiall on a small screen set steweeee

I don't think so.

Like most people, I have multiple tvs in my house. I've already got a HDTV tuner on my PC and soon I'll be getting a big screen hdtv, but the 19" in my bedroom still works and its actually got the the best looking SD picture I've seen. There is really no reason to get rid of it, I just want to be able to watch widescreen dvd-quality tv shows with surround sound.

The great thing about digital over the air transmission is no ghosts no snow no weak signal its either perfect or just not there In my case I live in San Jose ca. 70 miles from San Francisco and I receive 18 digital channels with a cheap outside antenna If I do a digital and anolog scan you can really see the difference good luck to you steweeee

480 is 480 whether it comes in as analog or digital. Sounds like you're just looking for an aspect ration change.

Well...

I don't know that 480 digital is the same as 480 analog. As Stewart said there will never be snow or ghost images in a digital signal. Why does a good quality dvd always look better than the best quality tv broadcast? Is it just because there is always a slight amount of snow in every signal that we just accept and got used to?

But yes, I am looking to see shows in 16:9 instead of 4:3 but I also want the slightly better picture quality than I get from standard broadcasts. 5.1 surround sound is also an improvement over pro logic surround.

As a guy who wants to try this new tech and get the new upgraded TVs, but the prices are just too much for what you get. What you get right now is to inconsistent for what you pay. When someone pays this new tech TV money that's at least 3-5 times the price of old tech then it better be the best from all angles. Right now from what I see it's not. If I can find something to hang on to the old tech then I will try it. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like on some reviews that I'm getting sales personnel trying sell me something.
