Broadband is anything faster than ISDN (which is twice as fast as dial-up).

Cable and ADSL are both broadband (ranging from about 512 kbit/second to about 8192 kbit/second download speed). The more you pay the faster it is. Satellite is broadband also, but can have limited upload speed. Don't do satellite if you're a fervent Internet-gamer or plan to share your mp3-collection with the world using p2p-programs.

I've had Cable and DSL

and I'm staying with DSL because where I live it's cheaper. I like Cable better, it's faster and doesn't seem to have the glitches that DSL has but these are minor differences rather than great gulfs in service. I can put up with these for the difference in price.
