DSL-Router-Home Network Issue

May 23, 2005 2:26PM PDT

Seems many encounter issues in this kind of scenario.
Tech help and documentation seems limited- Any ideas out there to try??
Facts: New DLink Router DI-604, Bellsouth Fast Access DSL PPPoE connection, 2 computers and 2 printers I'd like to share in home network. New Dell 4700 and older Gateway both with XP Home SP2. McAfee anti-virus, firewall etc. on both
Internet works great on both systems. Can see shared folders on Gateway back to Dell but can't access. Dell does not see Gateway shares. Can see each systems' shared folders in their respective network places. In fsmgmt.msc see respective shares only.
Tried: Disabled software firewalls (windows & mcafee) no luck seeing shares. Errors with network access- denied on both systems. Network wizard creates network work group on both systems, sees the computer names. Stuck on if it's an XP, DLink or McAfee issue.
Ideas? Thanks in advance!

Checklist:

1. Is the router firmware the latest?

2. Are you conversant with accounts and sharing procedures in "Windows?"

1. Brand new router but will check for update.
2. Fairly. I have the folders I want to share set on both systems. The one thread of info I'm reading is possibly XP prefers to share with same login?
I have myself with admin privledges and my wife with same, set on the 2 computers with HOME as the work group. Was going to try loggin myself in on both.

That may be enough...

Yes. XP enforces that you have an ACCOUNT of the same name and possible password on the machine you want to see or use a share. This is far from automatic and no wizard will help. The shared folder must be accessable from that user as well.

And .. being an admin doesn't mean that such rules are disregarded.

Finally the most common gaffe is the firewall. Many install, few understand what it does or how to configure. I offer no firewall lessons or support.

Progress - I hope!

Cool, thanks Bob-can't wait to try.
So in a nutshell if both users are logged on as "themselves" and have set shares on the same resources they won't necessarily be able to share those files or printers in this network scenario; they simply exist in the same workgroup?

Side note: Not sure the "wizards" really help sometimes. A step by step process helps you learn what's happening, makes troubleshooting easier. I was hoping for the documentation like you find with fixing a registry etc.

Lots of great sites.

But I can't duplicate content here. Here's a short list of networking sites.

The issue is pretty simple (yeah, after you get it working and do networking for a few years) but revolves around the concepts of accounts and permissions. The above sites cover it all.

Success...eventually

The website definitely helped.
I'm networked now. Advice for others: most of the issues seem to be based in configuring with Windows XP. Everything is working now on both XP systems behind the router firewall as well as the software firewalls in our virus protection. Turned XP firewall off. There are several settings to adjust or disable that got us up and running.
I found all the tidbits in the tutorial and sprinkled in some other posts. Great site. Thanks Bob!
