DSL modem requires frequent reboot to achieve decent speed

I believe this to be an ISP-related or modem problem because all computers on the home wi-fi network behave similarly. There is no connection problem, all computers have immediate access to the Internet, but speed is the issue. Not download and upload speed necessarily, those measure okay when checked with any of the speed test services. The problem is that, for instance, I type a URL into my browser (IECool address bar and it takes forever for the site to respond. I have the NetMeter utility, so I can see data going out and coming in, but what happens is that my 'request' seems to go out at once, but nothing comes back for a very long time... sometimes as much as a minute or more. Once the connection is completed, data comes in fast, but then clicking some link on that site will then start the process over again. But, if I reset the DSL modem, all is good for a while. What can cause this?

Sorry, you'll have to explain. Give me a hint and I'll try it. By the way, the same 'hesitation' phenomenon is happening with e-mail as well. I'm using Microsoft's Windows Live Mail, which might 'share' the Internet connection with Internet Explorer... no sure.

But using an alternative DNS isn't for everyone. That is, unless we learn more about networking it is best we not look into changes until we catch up.

This does bring up a good topic. How did we get here? That is, why did we field a system that has us becoming network engineers?
